Besides a colorful history, The Dalles and Wasco County have many historic buildings.  You can certainly while away your time driving up and down the streets of The Dalles viewing historic commercial buildings, homes, churches and schools.  The downtown area is an Historic District.  Take time to walk throughout the downtown area and visit the historic businesses and view the colorful murals.  Then take a drive around the community to view some beautiful homes.  Then start exploring the rest of Wasco County!

The Dalles Mural Society is responsible for the beautiful murals painted on the sides of several buildings around the historic downtown area. The murals depict famous moments in history magnificently illustrated by renowned northwest artists. A cultural and educational experience for all ages, every mural features a legend which tells the story of its illustrated historic event.

The Dalles, Oregon marks the end of The Oregon Trail and was the milestone for the hundreds of thousands of people who successfully participated in the greatest peacetime migration in the history of mankind. The murals present a life-size look at history in the making. Some of the murals have "talking boxes" for which you can purchase a key to be able to listen to the narrative. Keys can be purchased at various businesses and at The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce.
