When/Where built: Wrangell

Owner: Farquhar Matheson, Wrangell. A successful business man and community leader. He was born in Scotland and came to Wrangell from the Cassiar district in Canada where he worked for the Hudson Bay Company for eighteen years. Matheson died while serving as Wrangell's Mayor, January 1919.

"...spoken of as a "big canoe" with a gasoline motor, and quite fast. In June 1909 she made a trip to the lower river with 20 people and on June 17 of that year left Wrangell for Telegraph Creek with a party of five mining men."

"Fine Ride Despite the Rain" Mr. and Mrs. F. Matheson were host and hostess of a very pleasant canoe party on board the Big Chief Sunday. About seven-thirty the start was made from the float and in just seventeen minutes the big canoe passed under the bows of the Star of England at the cannery........(20 passengers on board) 6/03/1909 WS 5:3

"Narrowly Escaped Sticking" A big crowd piled aboard the Big Chief, Sunday afternoon to take advantage of the fine weather and set sail for Farm Island. The trip over was a pleasant one, but they were at the island a little too long, so that the tide was almost out and they had a narrow escape from hanging up on the bar on the way home....... 7/22/1909 WS 8:1

"Off up the Iskoot" Alec Vreatt, Fredrick Bronson and Guy Carson left for a trip up the Iskoot, Tuesday afternoon. The Big Chief towed them up the mouth of the Iskoot, and they will go the rest of the way by canoe..... 8/19/1909 WS 1:3
 

"Returns from Telegraph" The power canoe Big Chief arrived in from Telegraph Creek last Thursday afternoon, after a trip of 13 hours down the river between points. The trip up with the Disston hunting party was made in about 59 hours actual running time the power being ample at all points lining being avoided until the big riffle this side of Glenora was reached. Seven passengers,  considerable fur and the mail were brought down. Fred Johnston was in charge of the engine on the trip.
