"Sir: Yours of August 16 recd.....in reference to the survey of the Alaskan, she is not in the $3- class as she is under 100 tons. "No. 47 Custom House fees." I was instructed by my predecessor to make the charge of $1.50 instead of 67c for the reason that a thorough survey should be made each time, whether there was any dutiable goods manifested or not...."

"Sir: ...The steamer Alaskan has no name on either bow, her name and homeport on stern is omitted, name on pilot house is painted on a board and nailed to the vessel and the draught does not appear at either sttem or stern as required for registered vessels. The ALaskan being a stern whell propellor facilitates her draught marked on the stem only might be contrued as a substantial compliance withthe law, slthough I know of no authority for this.......The vessels named have been disabled and "laid up" for the Winter, but will soon be used again."

"Sir:.....it is the intention of Mr. John C. CAllbreath to run his steamer the Alaskan up the Stikine to British Columbia for the purpose of carrying his own freight only......He also asks permission to leave his steamer "Alaskan" lie beside the steamer of the Pacific Coast S.S.Co. at the wharf here and have these foreign goods, in lots of 20 or 30 tons, transferred from one vesel to the other for exportation, and thus save the cost of transportation to and storage in warehouse....."
