SIMPKINSON, L P (1910 U.S. Census) Stenographer
SIMPKINSON, LYDIA P (1920 U.S. Census) Manager Hotel – Simpkinson Hotel on East Colorado Street
SIMPKINSON LYDIA P 01/04/1872 Mother’s Name: WILLISON Born: KENTUCKY Died: LOS ANGELES (70) 01/24/1963 age 91 yrs25-Cent Debt Rises to $13.69 Plus “Penalty’
Mrs. Lydia Pyle Simpkinson, 70, of 177 N. Madison Ave, Pasadena, yesterday told how a 25-cent debt she believes she incurred unknowingly 50 years ago had, by virtue of compound interest computed semiannually, parlayed itself into $13.69, which she paid off as a “conscience debt,” adding another $50 “as a penalty.”
Half a century ago, Mrs. Simpkinson said while she was teaching Sunday School in the Congregational Church of Newport, Ky., the 60 girls in her class put on a charity fund drive. Their earthy slogan was “you surely orter give a quarter.” The quarters came rolling in and the fund was raised.
Recently, Mrs. Simpkinson went on, while sorting over some old cards she came across one of the charity drive pledges. Attached to it was a 25-cent piece which had been overlooked when the fund was counted.
Calling her attorney and her banker, she was informed that interest compounded would reach $13.69. That sum, along with a $50 bonus, she promptly sent to Rev. Charles J. Schaufuss, present pastor of the church where she taught, now known as the York Street Congregational Church of Newport. Los Angeles Times (1886-Current File); Oct 4, 1946; |
