Hi! My name is Calleigh and I am proud to be a Wrangell Garnet seller and to be able to share a piece of Wrangell’s History with you!  Wrangell is a small island located in Southeastern Alaska; the “Panhandle” as it’s otherwise known.  Nestled close to Wrangell Island is the infamous Garnet Ledge, rich with Alaskan History!  In 1962, Fred Hanford deeded the Garnet Ledge to the local Boy Scouts and the Children of Wrangell.  Children are allowed to harvest the garnets.  Families in Wrangell have enjoyed annual visits to the Garnet Ledge for generations!

I harvest single garnets and garnet in schist.  All measurements are approximate and prices will vary according to the quality and availability.  I also have garnet pieces that can be purchased by the bag.  Artists, teachers and rock hounds like the bags!

Loose Garnets and Garnets in Matrix Prices

Single Garnets range from $2.00 to $20.00 each

Garnet in Schist (matrix) range from $5.00 to $50 and up.

Garnet pieces in bulk $10.00, $15.00 and $20.00 lots.

FAQ

  • Where is the Wrangell Garnet Ledge?  According to the deed, the Ledge is located about 9 miles from Wrangell by boat.

  • How do you harvest the garnets?  My family helps me harvest the garnets by using hand tools to break schist and gently pry the garnets out.  Sometimes we’re lucky enough to have some stay in nice chunks of schist.

  • Are the garnets of gem quality?  Many years ago an all-women corporation harvested the garnets and made them into jewelry.  Most people just like to collect them, give them as gifts, or have them as souvenirs.

  • What tools do you use?  We use chisels, shovels, hammers of all types, crowbars, sifting tubs, and five-gallon buckets for harvesting.

  • Are the garnets hard to get?  I think the garnets have become much more difficult to locate.  I have not found as many as I have in the past.  I never know which sizes I will find!  You wouldn’t believe how hard the work is!  It makes your hands SORE!

  • How many garnet ledges are there in AK?  This is the only garnet ledge I know of in Alaska.  I have been researching to find out.  If you know of any other garnet mines in Alaska, please contact me!

  • How can I order more garnets and how can my friend get some?  If I can help you out with garnets in any way, just call, fax, or e-mail me.

  • Where can I learn more about Wrangell Garnets?  Send me an e-mail!  Also, check out this website: www.WrangellGarnetLedge.com You will be impressed by the spectacular garnet ledge history!  I have asked permission from the host to share this website address with you!  Enjoy!
